Preparing for
a power cut.
A few simple steps can make an interruption easier to manage.
Start with the basics.
Keep a working torch and spare batteries somewhere easy to find. Keep essential phones and other devices charged when practical, and consider a battery-powered or wind-up radio for news if your internet connection fails.
Think through your household.
Consider lighting, warmth, food, important contacts and the needs of children, older relatives or pets. Learn which appliances in your home need power to operate and what they draw.
If you decide to buy a portable power station, check the continuous output in watts, battery capacity in watt-hours, compatible plugs and the manufacturer's warnings. Never operate a fuel-burning generator indoors.
